Learn a little bit more about me below! If you want a quick snapshot of my professional experience, you can also check out my resumé.
I grew up in a small town right outside the Quad Cities called Eldridge, Iowa. Picture the quintessential Iowa farm town complete with corn bins, feed store and at one point, just one traffic light (it’s grown a little since then).
From there I moved to Des Moines to attend Drake University. When I wasn’t studying, you would have most likely found me participating in residence life or student government, enjoying time with friends or discovering the Des Moines area.
After college, I traded Iowa’s rolling hills of corn for the mountains and redwoods of Northern California. I spent two years in Redding, California exploring anything and everything the area had to offer. From Mount Shasta to Napa Valley and San Francisco to Portland, I tried see and do everything I could while I was there.
From the west coast to the north coast, in 2010 I left California for the cheese and football of Titletown – Green Bay, Wisconsin. I spent my more than four years there with trips to to the Frozen Tundra, wine tours in Door County and enjoying Lake Michigan.
Now back in Des Moines, I spend most of my time trying to be as involved in the community as possible. I’m involved in a number of community organizations. I serve on the Drake Young Alumni Committee and Hollywood Halloween Planning Committee, volunteer on stage and off at the Des Moines Playhouse, as a wish giver for Make-A-Wish and for the Des Moines Music Coalition. I also take part in a number of professional/tech organizations. I love participating in any and all events around Des Moines like the weekly farmers’ market, Art Week, 80/35, Winefest and many more!
Other things I love include travel, music, movies, cooking, volunteering in the community, hanging out at coffee shops, reading, time with friends, biking, hiking with my dog and generally enjoying the outdoors. I’m usually up for just about anything. The point of life is to live it, right?
Oh, and one other thing I really enjoy is a good quote, so here’s one of my favorites from H. Jackson Brown, Jr.:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Personally, I can’t wait for the next great adventure, whatever that may be.
You’ve heard a lot about how I spend my time outside of work, but what about my professional life? In a nutshell, it’s about a varied as my passions and interests.
I graduated from Drake University with a degree in broadcast news with minors in sociology and religion. It didn’t earn me a degree, but while at Drake I also spent three years working in residence life, include one year as a residence hall coordinator managing a hall of first-year students and resident assistants.
After college I moved to Redding, California to work as a news producer at KRCR-TV. I produced both the 6:30 pm and 11 pm newscasts Monday through Friday and filled in as necessary as an editor and a photographer for breaking news. In my two years there, I helped cover a number of local, regional and national stories, including one of the state’s worst fire seasons ever in 2008.
From KRCR-TV I moved to WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I started there as a news producer for the 10 pm newscast Monday through Friday. After about a year and a half in that position, I was promoted to the station’s executive producer position, managing a team of producers, reporters and photographers. In my four and a half years at WBAY-TV, I produced a number of special live programs including presidential visits, breaking Packers news, election specials, the partial collapse of the Leo Frigo bridge, investigative specials and the station’s 2012 Iowa caucuses coverage.
During my time in Green Bay, I also began taking web design and development courses both online and in-person. That eventually led to my move back to Des Moines, Iowa for a web developer position at Happy Medium, a digital advertising agency. Looking to grow my new career even further, I took my current position as interactive project manager at Lessing-Flynn Advertising Agency.
Both at Happy Medium and Lessing-Flynn, I’ve been working for further my development and design skills by learning additional coding languages, frameworks and backend development techniques. I also put a special focus on learning search engine optimization, website analytics, search engine marketing and user experience. I acquired my Google AdWords certification in early 2015 and am working toward a Google Analytics certification.
In addition to work, I’m also a member of the Des Moines Community Playhouse, Urbandale Community Theatre, Des Moines Web Geeks, Experiencing UX – Central Iowa and am a founding member and lead organizer for WordPress Des Moines. I also helped to create the Des Moines Web Collective, an online resource for Des Moines area tech groups, meetings and discussion. I’ve spoken on the topics of SEO, analytics and content for several of those groups as well as other groups around the Des Moines area.
