Thank You, Carrie Fisher

Dear Carrie,

Thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve given us over the years. You’ve given so much of yourself and you’ve truly made this world a better place.

You were a force to be reckoned with (pun intended) both on screen and off. As the iconic Princess Leia, you showed an entire generation that women could be strong, independent and hold their own with a blaster. I know you weren’t the biggest fan of the gold bikini, but Leia was so much more than a pretty face with amazing hair buns. She had the depth and nuance of a heroine little girls could look up to. Maybe most importantly, Princess Leia was a symbol of hope even in the darkest times.

Life isn’t always easy. Many times things don’t happen the way you would expect. Sometimes the villains are the victors. It’s true here on Earth as much as it is in a galaxy far, far away. Just as Leia did for the Rebel Alliance, you’ve done for us right here in our own galaxy. You gave us hope and inspiration in troubled times. You were a bright, shining star in the middle of the darkest of nights.

Perhaps your most enduring gift was your openness in sharing your whole self with us. You showed us that however strong we might appear, we are also flawed and that’s completely okay. In sharing your personal struggle with depression, addiction, and bipolar disorder, you showed us mental illness isn’t something we should be ashamed of, but a part of life that we can tackle together. You shone a light for those dealing with some of darkest parts of their lives.

I’m not sure you intended any of this when stardom swept you up at such a young age, but the world is a better place because of what you’ve brought into it. I can’t thank you enough and I know there are many, many others all around the world who share that same sentiment.

So all I can say is thank you. Thank you for your talent, your humor, your openness, and your struggles. Thank you for bringing a little more light in the world. Most importantly, thank you for giving hope to a universe that could use a lot more of it.

We will miss you more than you could ever know. The universe will be a darker place without your light.

May the Force be with you, always.

Tony
